Getting started: your first transfer note
This article takes you from your first sign-in to your first waste transfer note recorded in Skiplog. It covers only what a first session needs: signing in, naming the yard, and writing one load at the weighbridge.
Skiplog is not open yet, so anything on this page about what it does is what it is being built to do.
What this article helps with
You have an account and you want to get one load recorded. That is the whole job of a first session: one digital waste transfer note, written where the skip is weighed, in the fields the Environment Agency asks for.
Do it on the device you will actually use in the yard, a phone or a tablet, rather than the office PC. A note is meant to be filled in at the weighbridge with the carrier still standing there, and the first one is worth doing with the weighbridge ticket in your hand so you can see the fields against a real load.
You do not need a card to start. Starting the free trial needs no card, and each plan carries a 30-day free trial.
From sign-in to your first note
- Sign in with your email and password
Skiplog accounts are email and password. Use the address you signed up with. If you cannot get into the account at all, email support@getskiplog.com from that address and the team will pick it up.
- Name the yard
Only the site name is needed to start an account. The rest of the site's details, the address and postcode, the permit or exemption number, the region, a contact email and phone, any position statement and your return columns, head every note and every return, so fill them in when you have the paperwork to hand. The permit or exemption number is the one to get right before your first quarterly return, because it goes on the file.
- Open a new note and fill the EA fields
A note asks for the waste type, the EWC code, the quantity, the carrier's details and the destination site. The form is built to be completable in under two minutes on mobile or tablet, so work straight off the weighbridge ticket and the carrier's registration rather than copying it up in the office later.
- Save the note
Saving writes the note to the device first, then sends it. Each note carries its own status, queued, syncing or synced, so you can see where it is. That save is the moment Skiplog has done its job for you: the paper ticket now has a digital transfer note behind it, and the load is on your register.
After your first note
Once one load is in, the rest of Skiplog has something to work with. None of this needs doing in a first session.
- The site dashboard shows notes logged, tonnage by waste type and a compliance status overview, so the yard's quarter builds up as you write notes.
- The quarterly EA return is a one-click CSV export in a configurable EA-specified column layout, ready to submit without manual reformatting.
- Carrier, broker and dealer registrations can be tracked with their expiry dates on the registrations screen, which shows what is coming up.
Get the weighbridge writing notes first, then set up registrations and returns from the office. The separate articles on writing a transfer note, on tracking registration expiry dates, and on offline capture pick up where this one stops.
If something did not work
If a note will not save, keep the paper ticket until it does. If you cannot get into your account, or the note's status does not change once the tablet is back on signal, email support@getskiplog.com with the yard's name and the date of the load. Every message there lands in the support desk.
Skiplog is here to help you meet the waste tracking requirements. It does not sign off your compliance for you: a record is only as right as the fields typed into it, so the first note is also a good moment to check that the EWC code and the waste description describe the same load.
Questions
Do I need a card to start?
No. Starting the free trial needs no card. Yard is £39 a month and Team is £69 a month, each with a 30-day free trial.
Do I have to fill in my permit number before I can write a note?
No. Only the site name is needed to start an account, so you can record a load first. Add the permit or exemption number before you generate a quarterly return, because it belongs on the file.
What happens if there is no signal at the weighbridge?
The note saves on the device first and shows as queued. It syncs automatically when connectivity returns, and the status on the note moves to syncing and then synced.
How long should one note take?
The form is built to be completable in under two minutes on mobile or tablet, covering the waste type, EWC code, quantity, carrier details and destination site.
Which plan suits a one-man yard?
Yard, at £39 a month, is for the owner-operator who writes the notes himself with one other person in the office: one site, two people, unlimited transfer notes and unlimited registrations tracked.
Can the weighbridge and the office each have their own login?
Yard covers two people on the site. An account per person, with every note naming who wrote it, is part of Team at £69 a month, which allows an unlimited number of people on the site.
I cannot get into my account. What now?
Sign-in is email and password. If the password you have does not get you in, email support@getskiplog.com from the address on the account, with the yard's name, and the team will pick it up from the support desk.
What does Skiplog keep from that first note?
The waste, its codes and weight, when it came in, form and containers, POPs and hazard details, carrier and vehicle, and destination. Those are the records the waste tracking rules require your site to keep, and they stay readable and exportable while the account is open.
